Bright Star is an exquisitely presented telling of the romance between poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and his strong-willed and fashionably creative neighbor Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). Yet the sweeping romantic journey one might expect turns out to be a rather measured series of events. The only real obstacle to their love is that Keats has no income. His poems did not sell well, and he spends most of his days moping around with his writer friend Charles Brown. A beautiful and lyrical film directed by Jane Campion, but at times it just seems like some old PBS period piece--not that I dislike those things, but one was hoping for more. (6.5/10)
